Meet Me in McAllen!

The McAllen Hospitality Forum, a team of professionals from the hotel, car rental, restaurant and convention services industries, were privileged to have at yesterday's monthly meeting the Mayor of McAllen, Richard Cortez. Mayor Cortez spoke of his style of leadership, his desire for input with ideas from the public and of his resulting vision for McAllen. Mayor Cortez is committed to facilitating additional features in McAllen that will make people want to come here. Some of the attractions that can happen within just a few years are:
The development of 67 acres into a mixed use destination. This property is right in the middle of town but currently "under water." It's a holding lake for our water. This lake will be moved to less valuable land by 2012.
The development of additional parks including soccer, softball, and tennis facilities that will serve not only our local population, but bring in tournaments from around the state.
McAllen is fortunate to have this type of leadership in place and we all left this meeting determined to do our part to make McAllen better than ever. Let's meet in McAllen!

Caintra

Tomorrow will be held the Caintra monthly meeting where the topic will be the services and programs of the Center for Competitiveness of Monterrey and the Caintra community. They also are promoting a discount card, similar to our Value Card.

More and more people are saying: "Let's Meet In McAllen!"

More and more people are saying "Let's Meet In McAllen!" The City of McAllen is already recognized internationally as one of the fastest growing cities in America, and one of the friendliest cities in America. But that's not all, McAllen is a prime destination city for conventions, conferences, and meetings.

The question is: Is McAllen big enough to host your convention? The answer is Yes!!

The Texas Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA) held its 2009 Annual Convention in McAllen accommodating 2,000 high school students during the 4-day event. Texas HOSA Executive Director, Janet Villareal, says they had a great time! "The Convention Center was a magnificent setting for our conference. I have not received nothing but positive comments about McAllen. This is truly a wonderful city to bring your conference to."

The McAllen Convention Center, offers 174,000 square feet of high-tech, state-of-the-art multifunctional meeting space, 59,400 square feet column-free exhibit hall, 23,800 square feet lobby concourse, 16 breakout rooms, and an elegant 10,148 square feet ballroom.

With abundant hotel rooms and a myriad of restaurants, night life, attractions and destinations eager to "show off" for visitors, McAllen is ready, willing and able to handle almost any event, large or small.

Wildlife and nature groups are also saying "Let's Meet In McAllen!" The North American Nature Photography Association recently awarded the 2011 Annual Convention to McAllen. Reasons behind the decision included its tropical climate, abundant birding locations, and the new McAllen Convention Center that is perfectly located and surrounded by shopping and restaurant areas. The traditional architecture and contemporary spirit will not only delight your eyes, it will enrich your senses and make you want to bring your next big event and say "Let's Meet In McAllen!"

The McAllen Convention and Visitors Bureau is pleased to offer assistance and services for conventions and meetings that utilize 100 or more hotel nights in McAllen properties. If your event brings in 500 or more hotel room nights in McAllen you may qualify for some of our incentive packages which include complimentary meeting and exhibit hall space. advance planning assistance, delegate packets, name badges, registration assistance, printing, mailing and marketing, and much more.

The bottom line is that McAllen is an affordable opportunity to host a convention in South Texas. 26 successful events held last year are just an example to make your organization say "Let's Meet In McAllen!"

McAllen Chamber Installs Solar Panel Array

The McAllen Chamber of Commerce building now boasts a 10-panel solar array, generously donated by Green Mountain Energy. The switch will officially be turned on today by McAllen Mayor Richard Cortez at the official dedication ceremony.

We're very excited and appreciative to have received the array from Green Mountain Energy, and look forward to leading the way towards more energy efficient living in the City and Valley by reducing our carbon footprint. There are way too few alternative energy sources in the Valley now-hopefully more businesses and homeowners will begin to consider installing panels, those bird-friendly wind turbines, or other alternative sources.

Music After Hours Pre-Event Concert

Music After Hour this Friday, April 23rd will be at the McAllen Convention Center. We will have 2 stages, one on each side of the reflecting pool where local DJ's will spin their music from 5pm to 11pm. We have been having a whole lot of rain in McAllen the past two weeks-well, a whole lot for us! Everything is incredibly green and the temperature is probably 5 to 7 degrees cooler than usual. This makes it a great time to be outdoors. If you like birding, fishing (the lakes are really full of bass) or any type of sports like golf, hiking, baseball, biking etc., this is the place to be. Actually, I like to swim but have not hit the pool yet because it's been so cool (I'm getting chicken in my old age) but now's the time to start. I'm also remembering a great kyaking trip we took in the Rio Grande last summer-and looking foward to doing it again. Let's meet in McAllen and have fun!

McAllen Chamber of Commmerce Getting Green Energy Right on Time for Earth Day...

"Commemorating the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, on Thursday, April 22, 2010, at 10 A.M. the McAllen Chamber and Green Mountain will unveil the Chamber’s first solar array and the first to power a Chamber in the entire Rio Grande Valley."

The McAllen Chamber of Commere is taking another step towards going green. It has acquired solar energy capabilities. "That's one small step for the McAllen Chamber of Commerce, one giant leap for the city of McAllen." I don't want to take away from crediting Neil Armstrong famous quote, "One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." I'm simply borrowing this quote to make a point of a small accomplishment that may lead to major positive changes in the community and overall in the enviroment.

Get involved in your community and give a little back to nature,"Go Green..."

Special Music After Hours Show

Let everybody know about this show and we will see you there.
People meeting in McAllen can now enjoy baseball at both the collegiate and professional level. With the season just beginning I'm happy to brag about our University of Texas Pan American team. We have a new athletic director and a new coach who bring a really high degree of professionalism to this prestigious University-recently more famous for academics than athlethics. UTPA has a rich history of success in baseball and I expect it to regain that stature. Let me know if you want a schedule of games. Our pro league team, the Roadrunners, has won it's league in recent years past and also provides a quality experience. Both teams play in a relatively new and very comfortable stadium. So, let's meet in McAllen and let's go out to the ballgame! By the way, if you are bringing a group to McAllen and want a group outing to the ballpark, we can make that happen. Last night I attended our "Broadway in McAllen" production of STOMP. It was the second time I've seen this delightful show and I think I enjoyed it even more than the first time. This show makes you smile and laugh for an hour and a half without a single word of dialogue. It's amazing what "miming" and body language can communicate! Broadway in McAllen has been a long-time partnership with the CVB, bringing this type of entertainment to town four to six times a year. It's another "quality of life" issue that makes McAllen a great place to live. Come see us when you can and let us "meet you in McAllen."

Not Your Mother's Art Exhibition

The McAllen Arts Council is sponsoring its second annual Fine Arts Show this week through 10 pm Friday night at the McAllen Chamber of Commerce, 1200 Ash Avenue, 1/2 block east of Archer Park. Some of the McAllen area's best artists are exhibiting and selling their art. There are oils and watercolors enough to please any traditional art aficionado, but there's also a lot of funky art- sculptures, jewelry, mixed media and just "different" expressions. Plus, you get to vote for your favorite artist. Stop in Thursday any time from 8 to 5 or Friday from 6 to 10. Music After Hours will be going on Friday night, too, so it's a multi-arts experience in McAllen. Come check it out.

CAINTRA Annual Assembly

Last Thurday I atended the Annual Assembly of the Monterrey Chamber of Industry (CAINTRA) where also 2,000 entrepreneurs attended. The keynote speaker was Guillermo Ortiz Martinez, former Governor of the Bank of Mexico
The weather here in McAllen is just about as good as it can possibly get. Lows are about 60 and highs are about 80 every day! I played golf yesterday and the grass is emerald green, the birds are chirping and life is good! Don't ever "sample" new golf clubs (if you are a serious golfer) unless you are prepared to buy a whole new set. For the second time in five years, when the salesman came by with all the latest and greatest, I planned to buy one specific club. For the second time in five years, I loved 'em all and puchased a whole new set. They have a machine now that tells you EVERYTHING about your swing and the trajectory and flight of the ball. So..I was buying with confidence and so far, having used them in a real game twice, I'm really glad I got 'em. Golfing is ABUNDANT in McAllen with several really good golf courses available in town or right next door-so "let's meet in McAllen!"

If you want more information or just to chat, call me at 9456-682-2871 or email me at jdeuser@mcallencvb.com.

McAllen Chamber: "Let's make sure McAllen is counted and accurately represented"

The McAllen Chamber of Commerce takes this opportunity to remind the public about the importance of filling out and returning the 2010 Census form by April 1.

“Let’s make sure McAllen is counted and accurately represented.” Steve Ahlenius, President & CEO of the McAllen Chamber of Commerce said, as he explained that everyone needs to participate in this once-a-decade count of our population. “It directly affects how more than $500 billion per year in federal funding is distributed.”

April 1st 2010 is National Census Day. Residents should use this day as a point of reference for sending their completed forms back in the mail. From April - July 2010 Census takers will visit households that did not return a form by mail.

“Participating in Census 2010 means a brighter tomorrow for everyone,” Nancy Millar, Vice-President and Director of the McAllen Visitors Bureau said. “In fact, the information the census collects helps to determine how federal funding each year is spent on infrastructure and services like: Hospitals, job training centers, schools, senior centers, emergency services, bridges, tunnels and other-public works projects.”

Alhambra is located on McAllen's 17th St Entertainment District. Check them out at : www.alhambraon17th.com.

Increasing the amount of $50 to $300 dlls for crossing

On March 18 begins increasing the amount of $ 50 to $ 300 dlls per passenger for the crossing of goods., so the "regiomontanos" (people from Monterrey) are beginning to prepare for travel to McAllen and shop: bathing suits, sandals, shorts , towels, luggage, etc.. prior and during the Easter holidays
I'm really excited about the next McAllen International Travel Show-even though it won't happen until next January. The reason I'm excited is because we already have strong interest expressed by an RV Dealership and a Dargel Boat dealership. These two types of exhibitors are new to the Travel Show but they really do complement the destinations and attractions that have been popular for years. I'm also hoping to attract a motorcycle dealership as well. These three new attractions will help fill up the huge exhibit hall at the McAllen Convention Center. We will be bringing back the "South of the Border Grill" and, as another new feature, we plan to have places, quite and semi-private where you can book a trip, a tour, a fishing trip, or whatever you want. I'm sure I'll be posting more about all this as the year goes along. In the meantime, let's meet in McAllen!

This city has its fair from March 4 to 14 with cultural events, musical groups, Mexican snacks (antojitos mexicanos) and rides.

What is the McAllen Creative Arts Incubator

I know that there are still a lot of people out there who do not know what the Incubator is. Let me give you a quick rundown on what the Incubator is and what we strive to achieve with the Incubator. The McAllen Creative Art Incubator is a venue that offers artists low cost studio space with 24/7 access. Our goal is to support the continued growth of artists in all genres of art in an effort to further the arts in our community, thus giving all who live in and around McAllen a better quality of life.
We've been talking about fishing around here lately. Turns out that Falcon Lake is one of the hottest bass fishing lakes in the country and it's only about an hour and a half from here. The Arroyo and bay between South Padre Island and Port Mansfield has long been one of the best places in the country to catch trout, redfish, and flounder for years. It's also only about an hour and a half from here. As a matter of fact, I'm fishing there next week! March is one of the best months, but actually, the fishing is almost always good there. Several hotels have expressed an interest in hosting people who like to hunt and fish. We are prepared to connect guests with outfitters and hunting guides to increase the odds of a successful trip. So give us a call and "let's meet in McAllen!" For mor information call me at 956-682-2871 or drop me an email at jdeuser@mcallencvb.com.

Studio Available at the Creative Arts Incubator

The McAllen Chamber of Commerce has a studio available for rent at the Creative Incubator. The Creative Incubator is a venue that offers low cost studios for aspiring artists. The Incubator is meant to foster the creativity of the tenants and provide emerging artists and organizations with managerial, legal and technical support. The goal of the Creative Incubator is to support the continued professional growth of artists in order to enhance the cultural and economic vitality of our community. If you are interested in applying for a studio at the Incubator, please contact Greg Schuller at 956-687-2787.
The McAllen CVB has embarked on a project to revise our web page. The web page we currently have is over two years old. Two years ago, people were raving about it because it was vivid, imformative, and easy to navigate. But, as an example of how fast technology and our expectations evolve, the web page is now a little cluttered, a little "busy" and not as vibrant in impact as it was. We started to "tweak it" and then decided it needed more than tweaking. MPC, our award winning web developer, has already designed a new home page that we like a lot and will, within a few weeks, fill the page up with photos, information, calenders, and perhaps most important, easy to navigate links to hotels, attractions, meeting planner information as well as other critical content. Soooo, give us a look in April and tell us what you think! Your feed back is valued and you can reach me at jdeuser@mcallencvb.com or 956-682-2871

Usually, when a meeting planner or tourist is thinking about McAllen, the first thing they do is check out our web page. We think we have a pretty good page, but we are committed to making it great! We'll be working with our web master on a monthly basis for the next few months to initiate new informational "buttons" and to simplify and make the page more user friendly. we have already moved the "hotel" button to the front of the CVB page and we are working on linking every member hotel's page to our page.

We will be creating a section of the web pages to our McAllen Entertainment District soon. This exciting part of town has developed over the past two years to the point that it's a significant destination in McAllen.

Take a look at our web page and give us some ideas. All the good ones come from our friends who talk to us about how we can serve you better. You can contact me at Jdeuser@mcallencvb.com.

Let's meet in McAllen!

Perfect weekend for some fun

This seems to me to be the perfect weekend to go out and have some fun. The holidays are over and we're back to our regular routines... but the memories of holiday parties still linger, making us think that all the fun shouldn't be over so soon. I know- let's make a new holiday- call it Let Down Night! That's as in "let down your hair" (a really old saying meaning relax and have some fun)... or as in "if you feel let down after the holidays, let's go out."
I like it.
And 17th Street is calling.

New Ideas and Activities for a New Year

We are always making New Years resolutions that are not feasable or that we get burned out on and give up on. Why not try looking at the New year in a different way. Try new things; things that you didn't know you could. You would be surprised what we offer here at the Incubator. Ever wanted to learn Ballroom Dancing? What about Oil Painting? Yoga has always been a positive way to relieve stress and get yourself healthy. And of course, there is pottery. We offer so many different activities at the McAllen Creative Incubator and they are all reasonably priced. You should look into it. Call Greg Schuller at 956-687-2787 for more information on these and other activities offered.

Feliz Dia de Reyes

Tradition has it that came from the East, three wise men, and they were guided by a star (The Star of Bethlehem) which led them to Bethlehem. They sought the newborn Jesus and worshiped him, offering gold (representing its true nature as a present given to the kings), incense (representing his divine nature, used in worship at the altars of God) and myrrh (a compound embalmer for the dead, representing the future suffering and death of Jesus).
In central and southern Mexico, the children write a letter to the Wise Kings asking for the gifts they want and ensuring their good behavior during the year.
Throughout Mexico and it is customary to share a family meal (roll) on Jan. 6, a Rosca de Reyes, hiding several small plastic dolls that represent the baby Jesus, one who at the time the thread is from one of them is charge of making tamales and atole or inviting 2 February, honoring Saint Candelaria... So wait for an invitation.

Cultural Arts Classes for 2010

We started the New Year off with a Cumbia Dance Workshop last night that was excellent. The presenter, Sam Montezco from DCM, taught the 60 plus people in attendance the basic steps of the Cumbia and then some. We had over 30 people who were walk-ins, so needless to say the Auditorium was packed. Our next Cultural Arts & Entertainment Series (CAES) workshop is Tuesday, January 19th and will be a Yoga Workshop presented by Irma Burr. For an up to date listing of all CAES Workshops planned for this year, go to www.mcallenart.com or contact Greg Schuller at 956-687-2787 for more information.
